Railway underpass from Steyne Ave to Plimmerton Domain

Opening up the underpass to the domain has linked the village to the area beyond. It gives easy access to recreational areas like the Ara Harakeke Walkways for walkers and cyclists. This area includes the park and ride carpark next to Plimmerton railway station. It also provides a short cut to and from Plimmerton’s industrial area and the new (2016) motorhome and caravan park in Ulric Street and the just-completed fenced dog exercise area (2020).

In 2021-22 major developments are planned for the southern domain area by rail authorities. Groups currently working in the area, Porirua City Council as well as Plimmerton Residents’ Association and Friends of the Taupo Swamp and Catchment will continue with planned landscape and restoration projects in the rest of the domain.(see 2020 Plimmerton Domain).

The underpass has been enhanced with murals by local children which show projects carried out here by this community in the past ten years. It is hoped that when the underpass is reconfigured for the planned station platform extension that repainting, resurfacing of the floor and improved lighting will be included. In 2019 safety rails for pedestrians were added.
